For the longest time, people believed that AI was only reserved for IT students. You know, the ones who understand coding, enjoy software updates and can look at a screen full of symbols without panicking.
But that idea is now very outdated.
AI has officially left the computer lab. It has walked into boardrooms, clinics, classrooms, creative studios, factories, newsrooms and offices. In fact, it has probably joined the meeting before some of us have even opened our laptops.
This is why AI literacy matters for every student, not just those studying technology.
But first, let us clear something up. AI literacy does not mean every student must become a coding genius overnight. It simply means understanding what AI is, how it works, how to use it properly and how to think critically when using it.
For business students, AI can help study customer behaviour, market trends and decision making, although it still cannot fully explain why someone is shopping online at 1.00 am while eating instant noodles. In healthcare, AI can support diagnostics, patient monitoring and medical research, but patients still need reassurance, trust and compassion from real people. For education students, AI can help create learning materials and personalise lessons, but it still cannot walk into a classroom and realise that everyone is pretending to understand Chapter 5 when they are actually lost somewhere around Chapter 2.
For communication and media students, AI can draft content, translate text and analyse audience response, which is very useful when the brain has stopped working after staring at the same sentence for 40 minutes. For design students, AI can generate ideas and visuals in seconds, but creativity still needs taste, emotion and a human eye. For engineering students, AI is shaping automation, smart systems, construction, manufacturing and energy solutions, but even the smartest tools still need people who can question, test and improve them. Because when something goes wrong in the real world, nobody wants to hear, “The machine said it was fine.”
The truth is simple. AI is no longer only for one type of student. It is becoming part of almost every field. The future workplace will not only reward people who know how to use AI, it will reward people who know how to use it wisely.
That means asking better questions, checking facts, protecting data, understanding bias, thinking ethically, and knowing when to trust technology and when to challenge it.
