The Faculty of Pharmacy at SEGi University continues to strengthen its commitment towards meaningful community engagement through the successful organisation of the Medication Disposal Awareness and Public Education Campaign, an initiative that reflects the university’s broader vision of making healthcare education more visible, impactful, and deeply connected to the communities it serves.
In line with the Vice Chancellor’s aspiration of enhancing the visibility of healthcare disciplines within SEGi University through purposeful outreach and community-driven initiatives, this campaign served as an important platform to demonstrate how future healthcare professionals can create meaningful change beyond the classroom. The programme was entrusted to Ms. Abileshini Venkatesan and Ms. Chia Lee Huang, academicians of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and was actively carried out by Year 1 Bachelor of Pharmacy students who embraced the opportunity to translate knowledge into real-world impact.
The campaign focused on raising public awareness regarding the often-overlooked issue of improper medication disposal, an important healthcare concern that directly affects both human health and environmental sustainability. Unused, expired, or unwanted medications are frequently discarded through household waste systems, unintentionally contributing to environmental contamination, accidental poisoning, medication misuse, and the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Pharmacy sought to educate the public on safer disposal practices while highlighting the increasingly important role pharmacists play in safeguarding both individual and community well-being.
Throughout the event, members of the public were engaged through interactive educational activities, informative discussions, and awareness materials designed to make healthcare knowledge accessible and relevant to everyday life. Visitors learned practical approaches to responsible medication disposal while gaining a deeper appreciation of how pharmacists contribute not only to medication management but also to broader public health and environmental stewardship. An interactive educational quiz further enhanced public participation, creating an engaging learning experience that reinforced key healthcare messages in an enjoyable and memorable manner.
For the Year 1 pharmacy students, the event provided an invaluable experiential learning opportunity that allowed them to step confidently into their emerging professional roles. Through direct community interaction, students demonstrated strong communication abilities, professionalism, teamwork, and the confidence required to effectively deliver evidence-based healthcare education to diverse audiences. More importantly, the experience allowed them to appreciate the evolving role of pharmacists as accessible healthcare advocates and educators within society.
