SEGi University Accounting & Finance Students Excel in CIMA While Gaining Industry Experience at KPMG

SEGi University Students Excel in CIMA While Gaining Valuable Industry Experience at KPMG

At SEGi University, learning goes beyond the classroom. Through professional qualifications, industry exposure and leadership opportunities, students are encouraged to take proactive steps towards building successful careers even before graduation.

Two outstanding Bachelor of Accounting and Finance students, Brandon Ng Kam Yung and Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu A/P Raswinderjit Singh, are doing exactly that. Both have successfully pursued the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification alongside their undergraduate studies, while gaining valuable industry experience through internships at KPMG PLT.

Their journeys reflect the determination, discipline and commitment of SEGi students who strive to challenge themselves and prepare for the professional world from an early stage.

Turning University Studies into Professional Growth

Through SEGi University’s A-Star Programme, students have the opportunity to pursue CIMA alongside their Bachelor of Accounting and Finance studies. This pathway enables students to complement their academic foundation with professional knowledge in accounting, finance and business decision-making.

For Brandon, pursuing CIMA while completing his degree was both a challenge and an opportunity to broaden his knowledge beyond the university curriculum. Managing his degree, professional qualification and internship required strong time management, discipline and commitment.

His hard work paid off when he successfully completed his CIMA examinations and became a CIMA Affiliate before graduating. The achievement has strengthened his confidence as he prepares to enter the professional world.

At the same time, Brandon’s audit internship at KPMG has given him the opportunity to experience the accounting profession in a real-world environment and understand how the knowledge gained through his degree and CIMA studies can be applied in practice.

Gurpreet: Pursuing Professional Excellence Before Graduation

Gurpreet has demonstrated an equally strong commitment to professional development. Throughout her academic journey, she successfully completed the CIMA Professional Qualification before completing her Bachelor’s degree.

For Gurpreet, this milestone reflects her dedication, discipline and passion for continuous learning. Completing a demanding professional qualification while pursuing a university degree required her to effectively balance her academic and professional studies.

Her achievements extend beyond academic and professional qualifications. Gurpreet has also served as a CIMA Affiliate Ambassador for SEGi University, where she promoted the CIMA qualification, engaged with fellow students and supported initiatives that encouraged professional development and career readiness.

Through the role, she developed valuable leadership, communication and networking skills while becoming an advocate for professional qualifications among her peers. Her experience demonstrates how university life can be an opportunity not only to develop academically, but also to inspire and support others.

Gurpreet is also currently undertaking her internship at KPMG PLT, where she is gaining practical industry experience and applying the knowledge and skills developed through her Bachelor of Accounting and Finance and CIMA studies.

More Than a Just Another Degree

What makes Brandon and Gurpreet’s journeys particularly noteworthy is the combination of academic studies, professional qualification and industry experience.

Both students have progressed through their CIMA journey while pursuing their bachelor’s degree and are now gaining professional exposure through their internships at KPMG. Their experiences demonstrate that professional development does not have to wait until graduation—it can begin while students are still on campus.

Their achievements also serve as an inspiration to fellow Bachelor of Accounting and Finance students at SEGi University. Their journeys show that students can pursue a degree, work towards a professional qualification, gain real-world experience and develop leadership capabilities—all before completing their undergraduate studies.

For students considering the CIMA pathway, Brandon encourages them to take advantage of the opportunity to pursue a professional qualification while still at university. Although challenging, he describes the experience as highly rewarding.
