On 10 August 2024, SEGi University proudly hosted the MIID Varsity Dialogue 6.0, bringing together 45 lecturers from universities across Malaysia. The event was designed to foster meaningful dialogue between academia and industry professionals, with a focus on improving practical training for interior design students at both degree and diploma levels. Through thoughtful organisation and participation, SEGi University reinforced its commitment to shaping future design professionals and bridging the gap between academic training and industry expectations.
The event’s keynote speaker, PM IDr Dr M. Zafrullah MT, and industry expert IDr M. Noor Ariffin provided insights into the challenges faced by educational institutions. Discussions centred around critical topics such as curriculum alignment with industry standards, internship programs, and accreditation. As the interior design field continues to grow, ensuring that students receive relevant and practical training is essential to preparing them for success in a competitive market.
Key outcomes of the dialogue included the call for more structured internships to provide students with comprehensive, hands-on experience. The value of longer internships and standardised contracts was emphasised as a means of ensuring fair opportunities and consistent learning experiences. Participants also highlighted the need for accredited programmes, which not only boost the credibility of academic institutions but also help graduates stand out in the job market.
As the global interior design industry is projected to grow to USD 255 billion by 2029, initiatives like these are crucial to maintaining a skilled and innovative workforce. By addressing industry needs, SEGi and its academic partners are equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to Malaysia’s growing creative economy.
This event marked a significant step forward in enhancing interior design education across the country. It provided a platform for educators to exchange ideas and implement new strategies that will better prepare students for the demands of the professional world.
