SEGi University recently celebrated the success of four students from its Faculty of Dentistry who participated in the 2024 International Summer Course at Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. Themed “Natural Resources and Technology in Dentistry,” held from 18 to 25 September, was an immersive opportunity for participants to explore the innovative use of natural materials and AI technology in modern dental practices. This participation reflects SEGi’s commitment to providing transformative international experiences that enhance both academic and practical skills.
The week-long course included expert-led lectures on topics such as the utilisation of AI in dentistry and natural resources for dental treatments. Participants were given hands-on experiences, such as exploring dental technologies like CADCAM and microscopes, reinforcing the connection between theory and practice. As the global dental market is projected to grow significantly, with AI playing a key role in improving dental healthcare, opportunities like this summer course are essential in preparing students for the evolving landscape of dentistry.
Participants also engaged in community service, delivering oral health talks to raise awareness about the dangers of unlicensed dental practitioners. Such community outreach aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, promoting quality healthcare and awareness within underserved communities. The initiative provided students with valuable experiences in both clinical education and community engagement.
A cultural immersion experience was also a highlight, with visits to historic Medan sites and a two-day excursion to Lake Toba, known as the largest volcanic lake in the world. These activities offered participants a unique opportunity to learn about Indonesian culture and fostered cross-cultural understanding—essential skills for today’s globally connected healthcare sector. According to the World Health Organisation, cultural competence is crucial in healthcare to provide patient-centred care and reduce health disparities.
In the final days, participants showcased their cultural talents during a closing ceremony, reflecting on their growth throughout the programme. This enriching journey not only enhanced students’ technical skills but also developed their interpersonal abilities, critical thinking, and adaptability. By investing in opportunities such as the 2024 International Summer Course, SEGi ensures its students have a well-rounded education combining scientific knowledge with cultural awareness and community responsibility.
Through collaborations like these, SEGi University champions quality, holistic education, encouraging students to grow beyond the classroom and prepare for impactful careers. The participation of SEGi students in this prestigious summer course is a testament to the institution’s commitment to international excellence, innovation, and social responsibility.
