Future Leaders Engage in Sustainable Property Development

SEGi University’s commitment to fostering industry-relevant education took center stage on 8 October 2024, when 23 students from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying (BQS) programme had the chance to explore sustainable design innovations at Sime Darby’s Elmina Property Operation Office. This educational visit was designed to introduce students to the concept of biophilic design—an approach that integrates nature into building environments to promote well-being and sustainability.

Led by industry professionals, the visit began with a briefing that explained how biophilic design principles, such as natural lighting, ventilation, and the use of green spaces, are transforming urban

Students also toured the local shopping mall and show houses, where they observed how these biophilic elements are applied in both commercial and residential settings. They saw firsthand how the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, the use of natural materials, and energy-efficient designs contribute to a sustainable living environment—aligning perfectly with modern architectural trends.

The experience gave students practical insights into the economic and environmental impacts of sustainable design. By observing real-world applications, the visit complemented their Construction Economics studies, highlighting how sustainability influences construction costs, property value, and market demand. As sustainability becomes an essential part of property development, the experience reinforced the value of innovative design in shaping the future of the construction industry.

This visit supports SEGi University’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by equipping students with the knowledge to promote sustainable development in their future careers.
