SEGians Dive into the Future of Manufacturing Tech

SEGi University recently hosted an industrial talk, “CNC Programming: Shaping Tomorrow’s Manufacturing,” organised by the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology. With 42 participants in attendance, the event featured industry expert Chan Kam Tong, who shared his expertise in CAD/CAM/PLM solutions and CNC machining innovations in Southeast Asia. As technology continues to revolutionise manufacturing, the event offered students a deep dive into the transformative role of CNC programming, with a focus on emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, and IoT.

CNC programming is crucial in advancing automation and precision, which are core requirements in today’s competitive global manufacturing industry. According to a report by McKinsey, automation in manufacturing is expected to boost productivity by up to 30%, making it a key driver of economic growth and job creation. Through this talk, SEGi empowered its students with insights into the skills required to stay relevant and meet the industry’s increasing demands for precision, efficiency, and innovation.

Events like these align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9, focusing on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The speaker emphasised the need for proficiency in CAD/CAM software and advanced programming, key skills in the manufacturing sector. A PwC report highlights that 72% of manufacturers are investing in smart technologies to promote sustainable production, demonstrating the sector’s shift toward responsible innovation.
