SEGi University Hosts Insightful Sharing Session on Road and Highway Engineering

SEGi University recently hosted an insightful sharing session on road and highway engineering, connecting students with real-world expertise from industry leader Ir. Azizul Hawari of HSS Engineering Sdn Bhd. Held on 28 October 2024, the session provided SEGi engineering students with a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of current trends, challenges, and innovations in road infrastructure, a field critical to sustainable urban development.

Ir. Azizul shared his extensive knowledge, covering essential topics such as sustainable design, innovative construction materials, and efficient maintenance practices. He highlighted how sustainability is increasingly integrated into infrastructure, with materials and designs chosen to ensure durability while reducing environmental impact. According to the World Bank, over $1 trillion is invested annually in global infrastructure, making sustainable approaches essential to minimising resource consumption and emissions.

A central theme of the session was the integration of smart technology, specifically for real-time traffic monitoring and data collection. This technology, as Ir. Azizul explained, plays a pivotal role in managing congestion, reducing accident risks, and optimising traffic flow. With an estimated 1.3 million annual road traffic deaths globally, advances in technology for safer, more efficient roads are critical, and SEGi is committed to equipping its students to be part of these advancements.

Ir. Azizul also discussed significant challenges facing the industry, such as budget constraints, environmental considerations, and the need for infrastructure to keep pace with changing transportation demands. He emphasised that achieving future-ready, resilient infrastructure requires collaboration between engineers, policymakers, and technology providers. Through sessions like these, SEGi fosters a learning environment that encourages students to think beyond traditional boundaries and be proactive in addressing the multifaceted needs of society.

This sharing session underscored SEGi University’s commitment to providing students with an education that aligns with global goals for sustainable and resilient infrastructure. By equipping students with knowledge and practical skills in line with real-world demands, SEGi supports future engineers in creating sustainable and efficient transportation systems that benefit communities and the environment alike.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
