Tristan Brendon Tann, Deputy Principal at Imperial International School Ipoh, navigates the hallways with a quiet confidence, a leader who knows his purpose. But his journey to this role wasn’t linear; it was a path paved with dedication, a thirst for knowledge, and a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education.
“It was about more than just teaching,” Tristan explains, “it was about creating a culture of learning, a place where everyone felt valued and supported. I realised that leadership wasn’t about power, it was about empowerment. It was about shaping the future of education in Malaysia.”
His early career was defined by a passion for teaching, a desire to ignite that same spark in his students that he had felt within himself. He thrived on the energy of the classroom, the challenge of making learning both engaging and meaningful. But as he gained experience, a new ambition took root. He saw the need for strong leadership within the Malaysian education system, leaders who could empower both teachers and students to reach their full potential.
This realisation led him to pursue a Master’s of Education at SEGi University. “To educators feeling stuck,” he advises, “I’d say: take a moment to reflect on why you entered this profession. Often, reconnecting with your purpose can reignite your passion.” He understands the hesitation that can come with pursuing further education. “It’s never too late to invest in yourself,” he encourages. “I understand that barriers—time, finances, or self-doubt—can feel overwhelming, but there’s immense value in taking even small steps towards growth.”
Tristan’s commitment to his own growth was recognised with a scholarship, allowing him to fully immerse himself in his studies. The Master’s programme at SEGi University itself proved transformative. Modules like Strategic Leadership in Education and Digital Technologies in Education resonated deeply, providing him with practical skills and a framework for analysing challenges and finding innovative solutions. His research on strategic leadership practices in a multicultural school further deepened his understanding of the Malaysian education system.
“Start by setting realistic goals and exploring flexible learning options,” he advises. “Remember, it’s not just about earning a degree; it’s about broadening your perspective and opening up new opportunities.” He reflects on his own experience, acknowledging the challenges while emphasising the rewards. “My journey wasn’t without challenges, but the support of colleagues, mentors, and family made it manageable. Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential and remind yourself that growth often happens outside your comfort zone.”
Today, as Deputy Principal, he seamlessly blends his practical experience with academic insights, fostering a positive school environment where every student feels seen and heard. He aims to create a space where “learning is engaging, leadership is encouraged at every level, and values like resilience and collaboration are nurtured.” His hope is that every student who passes through the school doors leaves not only with a strong academic foundation but also with the confidence and skills to lead in whatever path they choose.
“I believe in continuous growth, both for myself and for others,” Tristan reflects. “I want to empower those around me to succeed, and that’s what I strive to do as a leader.”
The Spark That Ignited a Passion
But what ignited this passion for education in the first place? Tristan traces it back to his own school days.
The scent of chalk dust and the murmur of eager voices – these were the familiar comforts of Tristan Brendon Tann’s world. Growing up in Sandakan, Sabah, he’d always felt most at home in the bustling energy of a Malaysian classroom. But it wasn’t just the atmosphere; it was the spark of connection, the sharing of knowledge, the way a teacher could ignite a passion within a student.
He remembered his secondary school English teacher with a particular fondness. She had a way of making every student, even the shyest ones tucked away in the corner, feel seen and valued. “It was more than just lessons,” Tristan recalls, a hint of that youthful awe still lingering in his voice. “She showed us how education could open doors, build confidence, and make us curious about the world.”
That inspiration blossomed into a calling. During school holidays, Tristan found himself drawn back to the familiar hallways of his alma mater, this time not as a student, but as a volunteer teacher, guiding his juniors through the intricacies of the English language.
He witnessed the transformative power of those “aha!” moments, the joy of seeing a student grasp a concept and grow in confidence. It was in those moments that he realised his purpose: to be an educator, a guide, and ultimately, a leader who could inspire others to reach their full potential.
This purpose is something he strives to instill in others. “A valuable life lesson I often share,” Tristan explains, “is that working in education is about far more than just the salary. It’s about the lives you shape and the future you help build. True fulfillment comes from knowing that the work we do leaves a lasting impression on others.” He emphasises the immeasurable rewards of witnessing a student succeed or finding their voice. “These are the moments that make all the hard work worthwhile.”
And Tristan’s aspirations extend beyond the walls of Imperial International School. He envisions a future where he can contribute to the larger educational landscape in Malaysia, mentoring other educators, leading workshops, and advocating for progressive practices. “I want my leadership to inspire a ripple effect,” he says, “one where excellence in learning leads to leadership that truly transforms lives.”
This desire to make a broader impact wasn’t confined to the classroom. Tristan had always been drawn to exploring new perspectives, whether through the pages of a book, the unfolding narrative of a film, or the immersive experience of travel. He found himself particularly drawn to culinary adventures, believing that “food is an integral part of culture.” These experiences, he shares, “inspire me to bring a global perspective to my work, connecting with students from diverse backgrounds and enriching their learning experience.”
He offers this advice to those hesitant about pursuing further education: “It’s never too late to invest in yourself. Start by setting realistic goals and exploring flexible learning options. Remember, it’s about broadening your perspective and opening up new opportunities.”
Tristan’s journey reflects the transformative power of lifelong learning. He shows us that leadership is an ongoing process of growth, fueled by a desire to empower others and create positive change. Through his dedication and passion, Tristan Brendon Tann is contributing to a brighter future for education in Malaysia, one student, one teacher, one school at a time.
