Postgraduate Students Shine at Innovation Week 2024

On 18 November 2024, two postgraduate students, Xu Bi Ying and Zhang Jian, made their mark at Innovation Week 2024, an event organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Built Environment (FKAAB) at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru. Competing against researchers from various institutions, their exceptional work earned well-deserved recognition.

Ms. Xu Bi Ying won a silver medal for her groundbreaking research titled “Run-Off Prediction Using Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks.” Her work utilises cutting-edge artificial intelligence techniques to predict water run-off patterns, which play a critical role in flood forecasting and water resource management. By leveraging Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks, her research offers a highly accurate and efficient tool for hydrological predictions, benefiting both urban planners and environmental conservation efforts.

Mr. Zhang Jian received a bronze medal for his research, “The Development Trend of Water Carrying Capacity in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, Based on System Dynamics.” His study examines the ability of Zhengzhou City to sustainably manage its water resources in response to population growth, industrial expansion, and climate change. Using system dynamics modelling, Zhang Jian’s research provides actionable insights for policymakers to ensure long-term water security in the region.

Both award-winning projects address critical challenges in water resource management and environmental sustainability. Their contributions not only highlight the power of advanced research methods but also underscore the importance of innovation in tackling global issues such as water scarcity and climate resilience.

Reflecting on their achievements, both students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to present their work on such a prestigious platform. Their success is a testament to the quality of mentorship and support they received from their supervisors and institution, as well as their own hard work and dedication.

The recognition earned by Xu Bi Ying and Zhang Jian at Innovation Week 2024 serves as an inspiration to other students and researchers, showcasing the impact of innovative thinking in addressing real-world challenges. Their achievements also reinforce the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and research in driving progress.

These research projects align with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Improving water resource management through advanced prediction models and sustainable planning.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Enhancing urban resilience and sustainability in response to climate change and resource demands.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action – Developing strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on water resources and urban systems.

Xu Bi Ying and Zhang Jian’s achievements highlight the potential of innovative research to contribute to global sustainability efforts, setting a benchmark for future academic and professional contributions.
