In a quest to bridge the gap between theory and practice, a cohort of chemical engineering students from SEGi embarked on a fascinating industrial visit to Central Sugars Refinery Sdn. Bhd. (CSR) in Batu Tiga, Shah Alam on October 17, 2023. This insightful journey, orchestrated by SEGi IChemE Student Chapter, offered students a firsthand look into the intricate processes of sugar manufacturing.
The visit commenced with a safety briefing led by Mr. Mustafa Akmal Bin Ariffin, the Head of Government Relations and Regulatory, followed by a comprehensive explanation of the chemical processes involved in sugar production by CSR Assistant Manager Plant Operation, Mr. Shoban Babu Veerarao.
Students were guided through a plant tour, witnessing various process units from the intake of raw sugar to the packaging of refined sugar. The massive centrifugal systems, filtration processes, vacuum pans, crystallizers, and the precision of a packaging arm robot were showcased, revealing the seamless coordination required to transform raw materials into the final product.
Beyond the technical insights gained, the industrial visit underscored the significance of academic-industry collaboration. It exemplified how the synergy between theoretical knowledge and practical application enriches the learning experience. Dr. Izni Atikah Abd Hamid and Dr. Nur Amirah Binti Mohd Zahri, alongside the SEGi IChemE Student Chapter, played a pivotal role in organizing this educational excursion.
This immersive encounter at the sugar production plant not only broadened the students’ understanding of chemical engineering processes but also emphasized the importance of such hands-on experiences in academic settings. It showcased the commitment of SEGi to providing its students with a holistic education that goes beyond textbooks, preparing them for successful careers in the dynamic field of chemical engineering.
