Emotional Intelligence and Motivation: Key Factors in Student Engagement

Imagine a classroom buzzing with energy, where students are actively participating, asking questions, and deeply engrossed in their learning. This is the vision of engaged learning that educators strive for. But what factors contribute to this ideal scenario?

A recent study published in Current Psychology sheds light on the key elements that influence student engagement. The research, which involved 336 students from two vocational education institutes in China, explored the impact of emotional intelligence, academic motivation, and teacher support on learning.

The findings reveal that students with higher emotional intelligence and stronger academic motivation are more likely to be actively engaged in their learning. Interestingly, the study also found that teacher support plays a crucial role in mediating this relationship. Supportive teachers who foster a positive learning environment and provide guidance and encouragement can significantly enhance student engagement.

“The results highlighted vital internal and external factors in the process of creating an academic environment that motivated students to learn,” explain the authors, which include Ravindran Latha from SEGi University.

This research provides valuable insights for educators seeking to create a more engaging and motivating learning environment. By understanding the interplay between emotional intelligence, motivation, and teacher support, educators can empower students to become active and enthusiastic learners.

The study also introduces a new instrument for assessing student engagement, providing a valuable tool for future research in the field of education. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how to enhance learning experiences and promote academic achievement in higher education.
