SEGi University continues to exemplify its commitment to providing quality education through hands-on learning experiences. On 6 March, 2024, students from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme embarked on an educational site visit to Phase F2-1/2 Elmina East, a development in Selangor’s “wellness and livable” city, Elmina East Township. This visit, organised by Ts Zamzarina, provided 14 students and 3 lecturers with invaluable exposure to real-world construction processes, reinforcing the practical aspects of their academic studies.
The visit was designed to meet the requirements of four key subjects within the programme, including Building Construction I & II, Building Services I, and Civil and Infrastructure Construction Works. The primary objectives were to familiarize students with construction methods used in building superstructures, observe the installation of drainage systems, analyze the formwork systems in low-rise buildings, and assess the ongoing civil works at the site. Such exposure is crucial in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to better understand the challenges and solutions involved in the construction industry.
Elmina East, part of the broader Selangor Vision City, serves as an important growth center within Greater Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. The township, strategically located along the Guthrie Corridor Expressway, is developed by Sime Darby Property and focuses on wellness as its central theme. The site visit, which included a comprehensive safety briefing and a guided tour by the project manager and engineer, allowed students to witness firsthand the intricacies of managing a large-scale construction project, from safety measures to the execution of complex engineering tasks.
SEGi University extends its appreciation to BQS alumnus Sheng Loong, who now serves as the Site Quantity Surveyor for this project, for facilitating this enriching experience. The students’ exposure to real case studies and the emphasis on safety protocols such as wearing helmets and protective shoes significantly enhances their educational journey, preparing them for future roles in the construction industry.
This educational initiative aligns with SEGi’s broader mission of fostering practical skills and contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By integrating field visits into their curriculum, SEGi ensures that its students are not only well-versed in theory but also equipped with the practical knowledge necessary to succeed in their careers.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 (Quality Education)
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
