On 24 September 2024, the faculty and students of SEGi University’s Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (BQS) programme participated in an insightful experience-sharing session focused on the design and construction of oil rig platforms.
The event, organised by SEGi University, featured guest speaker Nadiatul Akmar, a seasoned expert in the field. She provided valuable insights into the role of Quantity Surveyors in costing and procurement, as well as the importance of safety, material selection, and design considerations under the International Petroleum Oil Rig Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations.
Attended by students from the Quantity Surveying and Architecture programmes along with their lecturers, the session offered practical exposure to the complex world of oil rig construction. Nadiatul Akmar shared real-world case studies, highlighting challenges and innovative solutions encountered in large-scale, specialised projects. This session broadened students’ perspectives on potential career paths within the oil and gas industry.
The event was highly praised for its practical relevance, as it allowed students to gain an in-depth understanding of an industry that many had not previously considered. The opportunity to engage with a professional of Nadiatul’s calibre contributed significantly to the academic enrichment of the students.
