Since 2015, the world has witnessed a troubling increase in hunger and food insecurity, driven by the pandemic, armed conflict, climate change, and rising inequality. By 2025, around 735 million people, or 9.2% of the global population, are projected to be chronically hungry, with over 600 million still facing hunger by 2030. These statistics highlight the immense challenge in achieving the zero hunger goal as part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In alignment with the Zero Hunger campaign and the United Nations’ SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, SEGi University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SoHTM) recently organised a meaningful initiative to educate students about these critical issues. The faculty seized the opportunity to foster community spirit and promote volunteerism by preparing and distributing Bubur Lambuk, a traditional Malaysian porridge commonly served during Ramadhan.
This initiative strengthened relationships between lecturers, staff, and students through collaborative cooking activities. The programme also sought to instil a spirit of volunteerism, with different student groups assisting with the packaging and delivering the Bubur Lambuk. This hands-on experience taught practical skills and emphasised the importance of teamwork and community service.
The Bubur Lambuk, a delicious mix of chicken and beef with fragrant spices and coconut milk, was prepared under the guidance of Chef Fazley from Mamee and Chef Siti Solihah. The effort involved four students in cooking, starting at 9.30 am and finishing by 1.00 pm. By 3.00 pm, the distribution began around SEGi Tower and continued to the main campus of SEGi University.
Originally aiming to provide 200 packs of Bubur Lambuk for the community’s Iftar, the initiative exceeded expectations by preparing 260 packs. The extra meals were distributed to the Yayasan Rumah Anak-anak Yatim Wardatul Jannah in Kota Damansara, benefiting 20 individuals, including 16 students and 4 staff members. En Arif, the warden, expressed gratitude for the generous contribution.
The Bubur Lambuk Giveaway not only brought joy to the students and staff involved but also offered a valuable opportunity to contribute their energy, support, and ideas towards a charitable cause. The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at SEGi University hopes this programme will have a lasting positive impact on the students and the broader community, reinforcing the importance of social responsibility and active citizenship.
By participating in such initiatives, SEGi University demonstrates its commitment to fostering strong institutions and promoting peace and justice within the community, which aligns with SDG 16. The university continues to lead by example, inspiring students to take active roles in addressing global challenges and building a better future for all.
