In a continued pursuit of academic excellence, the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology (FoEBEIT) at SEGi University organised another remarkable colloquium on 1 November 2023. Following the success of the previous colloquium held on 4 October 2023, this event underscored SEGi’s unwavering commitment to fostering an environment of intellectual exchange, research innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The objective of this colloquium remained consistent: to serve as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, idea sharing, and the dissemination of research findings among students and faculty members from various engineering and environmental science disciplines. Renowned experts in their respective fields once again graced the event, offering diverse topics and insights.
The colloquium, expertly chaired by Dr. Chan Mieow Kee, the deputy dean of research of the faculty, and skillfully emceed by Ali Hamza, attracted a diverse audience of participants. Comprising 50 students pursuing master’s, PhD, and undergraduate degrees, as well as dedicated lecturers, the event created an inclusive atmosphere that encouraged extensive learning and lively discussions.
One of the highlights of the colloquium was the presentation by Dr Aida Isma Binti Mohamad Idris, a senior lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department at SEGi University. Dr. Aida Isma’s presentation delved into the fascinating realm of biofouling growth in a submerged membrane bioreactor. Her research employed Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) for in-situ observation, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of biofouling and potential mitigation strategies. It is worth noting that her findings were previously presented at the International Conference on Technology, Engineering, and Science in Antalya, Turkey, from 16 November to 19, 2022. This research project received funding from the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia (MOHE) through the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) in 2019, highlighting the significance and impact of her work.
Dr Nor Faiza Binti Abd Rahman, a lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department at SEGi University, presented a comprehensive statistical analysis of 30 years of rainfall data, specifically focusing on the Langat River Basin. Her research contributes to a deeper understanding of rainfall patterns, essential for effective water resource management and environmental planning. Like Dr Aida Isma, her findings were previously shared at the International Conference on Technology, Engineering, and Science in Antalya, Turkey, in November 2022. The research project was supported by the SEGi Internal Grant.
During her presentation, Datin Munira Binti Mohammad, a lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department at SEGi University, conducted a critical assessment of Vaturu Dam’s hydrological safety. By evaluating spillway adequacy, her research addressed vital aspects of dam safety and water management. Her findings were shared at the same International Conference on Technology, Engineering, and Science in Antalya, Turkey, in November 2022, with support from the SEGi Internal Grant.
Ir. Dr. Shamini Janasekaran, a highly accomplished researcher and lecturer at SEGi University, explored the realm of materials engineering in her presentation. Focusing on microhardness studies, her research featured the use of a low-power fibre laser in the autogenous lap joint between Ti6Al4V and Inconel 600. This groundbreaking research showcased cutting-edge technology in materials research and emphasised SEGi University’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation.
The colloquium once again achieved its objective of fostering academic exchange and collaboration, contributing to the growth and enrichment of the academic community at SEGi University. The audience actively participated, posing insightful questions and engaging in discussions with the speakers. This dynamic interaction created a vibrant shared knowledge and learning atmosphere, reinforcing SEGi University’s dedication to excellence in education and research.
As SEGi University continues to organise such impactful colloquiums, it reinforces its position as an academic and research excellence leader, setting the stage for further advancements, collaborations, and contributions to academia and beyond.
