SEGi University recently hosted an innovative summer camp initiative, merging education with tourism in a way that offered participants an immersive and enriching experience. The two-week edu-tourism programme was held at SEGi University, Kota Damansara, from 29 July to 9 August 2024, and welcomed 14 visitors from Pingdingshan, Henan, China. Organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology) and supported by the International Marketing department, the programme provided a unique blend of academic learning and cultural exploration.
The workshops, designed by expert lecturers with industrial experience, provided a comprehensive introduction to engineering, built environment, and information technology. Participants had the opportunity to engage in interactive learning sessions, including guided lectures, software simulations, lab practices, and hands-on activities. These sessions aimed to spark interest and deepen understanding in fields such as civil engineering (building bridges), electrical and electronics engineering (robotics and automation), architecture (assembling structures), information technology (IoT programming and websites), and chemical engineering (extraction and production). The use of hands-on activities ensured that participants left with practical knowledge, aligning with educational best practices that stress experiential learning.
In addition to the academic workshops, visitors were taken on guided tours of Malaysia’s iconic landmarks. These included visits to the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Dataran Merdeka, National Mosque, National Museum, and Melaka, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tours extended to Batu Caves, the Petronas Twin Towers, and Sekinchan Golden Field Haven, allowing participants to experience the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Visitors also explored Malaysia’s renowned shopping destinations such as KLCC Suria, PAVILION, and EXCHANGE TRX. These excursions offered a unique opportunity to gain a holistic view of Malaysia’s blend of modernity and tradition.
This programme not only allowed participants to enhance their academic knowledge but also served to inspire their interest in global engineering advancements and technological innovation. By providing insights into Malaysia’s infrastructure and technological development, the camp also reinforced the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically promoting SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Through its structured approach to learning and exploration, SEGi University successfully demonstrated how education can be a powerful tool in achieving sustainable development.
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. They particularly appreciated the interactive nature of the workshops and the valuable exposure to Malaysia’s cultural and technological landscape. The combination of brainstorming, teamwork, and practical engagement allowed them to better relate their learning to real-world applications. This dynamic educational model is increasingly important in an era where engineering, technology, and innovation play pivotal roles in global progress.
By organising this edu-tourism initiative, SEGi University underscored its role as a forward-thinking institution that supports the development of future global citizens. The success of this programme highlights SEGi’s ongoing commitment to fostering international collaborations and promoting sustainable development through education.
