SEGi University’s teams have shown their excellence in the water sustainability field, winning the Pitch It Right! 2.0 competition organised by IChemE Student Chapter from Nottingham University (Malaysia) in collaboration with BASF Petronas Chemicals Sdn. Bhd. The competition was a virtual platform for students from different Malaysian universities to pitch their innovative ideas to overcome water sustainability challenges in the industry. The event allowed students to showcase their skills and interact with experts from BASF Petronas Chemicals Sdn. Bhd. and other students from various universities.
The competition was judged by industry experts with over 30 years of combined experience, who rated the presentations based on technical feasibility, innovation, and potential industry impact. Team Blue (Muzahid Latif Khatry and Salah Ahmed Nasser Ahmed) and Team Kang Hui Kee and Alma Alamsyiah from SEGi University took first and third place, respectively.
Team Blue’s winning idea involved a real-time monitoring system using sensors, trackers, and control systems to monitor the quality of rainwater harvesting and recycling processes. This proposal utilized Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Industry Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) techniques to achieve the intended raw water quality, which meets the industry’s demand.
The proposal from Team Kang and Alma provided a novel solution to reduce evaporation water loss in cooling towers by employing a drift eliminator. The team conducted a detailed technical engineering analysis using SWOT analysis on the material, framework, cost-benefit analysis, and maintenance proposal of various types of drift eliminators. By reducing the use of makeup water, this innovative idea effectively reduced the operating costs per year.
The competition has provided SEGi University students with a unique opportunity to showcase their abilities, interact with industry experts, and network with other students. The winning teams’ ideas were of high quality, and their presentations were delivered with precision and confidence, which impressed the judges. This accomplishment demonstrates the university’s dedication to producing innovative and capable students who will excel in their future careers. Congratulations to the winning teams on an outstanding performance!
