SEGi University’s Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme took a remarkable visit to the Tenaga National Berhad (TNB) Labs in Kajang, Selangor on 21 March 2023. The delegation of 32 students and 7 lecturers visited the labs to experience first-hand the operation of TNB Labs which offers engineering testing solutions and failure diagnostics expertise.
Taqdir Abdullah, the Stakeholder Management Executive, and Ir. Ts. Sufian Abu Bakar, the Head of Section, began the visit with a briefing (High Voltage Lab). The delegates were then given the opportunity to tour the High Voltage Lab, where they saw cutting-edge testing and measuring equipment for precision testing and calibration.
The visit also allowed the delegates to meet with a team of experts who specialise in analysing engineering failures. The Forensic Engineering section displayed preserved physical evidence, such as microstructure analysis, fractographic analysis, elemental analysis, metallurgical analysis, and electrical and mechanical testing, that was later used for more in-depth root cause testing.
The visit by SEGi University to TNB Labs was eye-opening for the students and lecturers who were able to observe the lab’s operations firsthand. This experience is expected to benefit engineering students’ learning curve. TNB Labs provided lunch for the visit, and SEGi University expressed gratitude to TNB Labs for a memorable visit and experience.
Engineer demand is expected to grow by 3% between 2021 and 2030, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. As a result, visits to engineering labs such as TNB Labs are critical in preparing students for the field and ensuring they have the necessary skills and experience to meet demand.
Students and lecturers at SEGi University thoroughly enjoyed their visit to TNB Labs in Kajang, Selangor. Such visits are critical in preparing students for the job market and ensuring they have the skills and experience required to meet the demand for engineers.
