SEGi University’s IChemE Student Chapter hosted an industrial talk on 22 March 2023, where students from chemical and mechanical engineering were able to gain invaluable insight into the design and sizing of vacuum pumps. The presentation was given by Eric Goh, a vacuum pump specialist and General Manager of Vactech Sdn. Bhd. The two-hour lecture provided students with a practical understanding of the engineering fundamentals taught in their degree programmes.
Industrial talks are becoming increasingly popular as a way for students to learn from experienced professionals. According to a National Bureau of Economic Research study, students who attend industry talks are more likely to find employment and earn higher salaries after graduation. Such talks also give students an idea of what the industry expects of them and help them prepare for their future careers.
Students enjoyed the presentation, and they were able to interact with Goh and gain a better understanding of the hoover industry. Bridging the gap between academia and industry is an important aspect of education because it allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world situations.
