SEGi University’s Pharmacy Students have taken a break from their busy schedules by engaging in physical activities during the Sports Month for Pharmacy Students. On the 17th of March 2023, the SEGi Pharmacy Students’ Association (SPSA) organised a ‘Dynamic Yoga Class’ in collaboration with Jal Yoga. The event took place at the SEGi University KD Campus in SCCL 2. This initiative aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among students, thereby reducing the risk of physical and mental health disorders.
According to a report by the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is a leading cause of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. In Malaysia, 73.5% of adults are physically inactive, which puts them at risk of developing NCDs. Moreover, a survey by the Malaysian Ministry of Health found that depression and anxiety are prevalent among young adults, with approximately 30% of the Malaysian population aged between 16 and 29 years suffering from mental health disorders.
Yoga, which combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, has been shown to have positive effects on physical and mental health. A study by the American Psychological Association found that yoga can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while improving sleep quality and cognitive function.
During the ‘Dynamic Yoga Class,’ instructors from Jal Yoga shared their knowledge and valuable tips about the yogic lifestyle. The participants benefited from the workout session, which helped them reduce stress and improve their flexibility and balance. The President of SEGi Pharmacy Students’ Association (SPSA), Amanda Chang, presented the token of appreciation to the representative from Jal Yoga on behalf of the Faculty of Pharmacy, thanking them for their collaboration in promoting a healthy lifestyle among students.
This initiative is in line with SEGi University’s commitment to student well-being, as the institution recognises the importance of physical and mental health in academic success. By promoting physical activities such as yoga, SEGi University is providing students with the opportunity to maintain their physical and mental well-being, leading to a healthier student community.
The Dynamic Yoga Class organised by the SEGi Pharmacy Students’ Association is an excellent initiative aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among students. With physical inactivity and mental health disorders on the rise, initiatives like this can help students maintain their physical and mental well-being. SEGi University’s commitment to student well-being is commendable, and it is hoped that more initiatives like this will be undertaken to promote a healthy lifestyle among students.
