50,000 Experts. 132 Countries. One Goal—A Greener Future

SEGi University’s ASHRAE Student Branch had the opportunity to engage with leading industry professionals at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Malaysia Chapter’s Chinese New Year gathering, held on 25 February 2025 at Hei Loi Ton Restaurant, Centrestage, Petaling Jaya. The event brought together key figures in the heating, refrigerating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) sector, offering students invaluable networking opportunities with experts dedicated to building a more sustainable future.

Prior to the gathering, SEGi representatives attended the ASHRAE Malaysia Chapter’s Board of Governors meeting, where they gained first-hand insights into the organisation’s strategic decision-making and the pivotal role HVAC technologies play in addressing global climate challenges. With over 50,000 members across 132 countries, ASHRAE is a leader in advancing energy-efficient solutions that align with global sustainability targets. This collaboration reinforces SEGi’s dedication to equipping students with future-ready skills that meet evolving industry demands.

The HVAC sector is a crucial player in the fight against climate change. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), heating and cooling systems account for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. With urbanisation accelerating in Southeast Asia, sustainable HVAC solutions are more critical than ever. This engagement allows SEGi students to be at the forefront of innovation, contributing to energy-efficient systems that reduce carbon footprints and support a low-emission future.

Beyond classroom learning, industry collaborations like these provide students with real-world exposure and a competitive edge in the job market. Research from LinkedIn’s 2024 Global Green Skills Report highlights that demand for sustainability-related skills has increased by 40% over the past five years. By connecting with ASHRAE’s Board of Governors, regional officers, and committee chairs, students had the chance to build meaningful professional relationships that could shape their careers.

SEGi’s commitment to sustainable education extends beyond industry engagement. The university continuously integrates green technology, energy efficiency, and climate-conscious solutions into its curriculum, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to lead the transition toward a more sustainable built environment. This aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets net-zero emissions by 2050. By fostering collaboration with organisations like ASHRAE, SEGi is empowering the next generation to drive impactful change in industries that directly influence global carbon emissions.

This event highlights SEGi’s unwavering dedication to bridging academia and industry, fostering a new wave of professionals ready to take on climate challenges with innovative and sustainable solutions. By strengthening industry partnerships and providing hands-on exposure, SEGi continues to shape future leaders who will redefine sustainability in the built environment.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
