Centre for Green Bioprocess Engineering

Centre for Green Bioprocess Engineering

Profile

Bioprocess Engineering is a branch of chemical engineering specialising in developing and applying bioprocessing technologies. The Centre for Bioprocess Engineering relates biological materials such as microorganisms and plants to agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, medicine, biopolymer and the environment.

At the Centre for Green Bioprocess Engineering, we focus on biodegradable polymer, biogas production and extraction of natural products research to design efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly processes for various industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food and beverages, and energy. We aim to be the leader in bio-products-related research, which is produced in an environmentally friendly manner. The research is directed towards enhancing yields, reducing waste generation, and maximising the efficiency of bioproduction processes. In addition to research excellence, the Centre for Green Bioprocess Engineering is committed to knowledge dissemination and industry collaboration. With our dedication to advancing bioprocessing technologies, we continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of chemical engineering and promoting a greener world.

Projects

Currently, we are working on extracting potential bioactive compound of flavonoids, which helps reduce dengue fever, from the leaves of Carica papaya using a combined microwave and solvent extraction method. This project has collaborated with Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) researchers. Simultaneously, we are also dedicated to researching waste-to-energy utilisation. This project is currently working together with Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) to produce biogas from sewage sludge.
