SEGi University’s students give back to the National Zoo

Charity work is very important as it is about giving back to the community. It just feels great to donate and help others; it doesn’t matter whether it is human or animal.

60 Students and lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Built, Environment and Information Technology of SEGi University (Kota Damansara) carried out a fundraising programme between 13 July to 31 July 2022 and donated RM3,656 to Zoo Negara.

On 2 August 2022, all the students went to Zoo Negara and completed four hours of volunteer work. This volunteer programme is part of the subject requirement in their degree programme.

The aim of the visit is to enable the students to develop empathy, affection and concern towards animals. At the same time, students can learn more about caring for animals and the intricacies of being a zoo keeper.

Through the fundraising programme, students learnt that communication skills, teamwork, as well as project and time management are critical to success. At the same time, financial responsibility, working hard, creativity, and budgeting help a lot.

Students advise future fundraisers that group leaders must lead the group throughout the project and constantly update the latest news to the committee. Having ice-breaking sessions with all students is important as the students are from different courses.

At the same time, having detailed project planning with timeframes helps, but don’t forget to have a backup plan. Lastly, teamwork is very important; all students should give their full support and respond to the committees at all times.

The 60 students are from the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying, Bachelor of Art in Interior Architecture and Bachelor of Science Architecture.
