This Engineering Trip Proves Learning Doesn’t Stop in the Classroom

A team of nine engineering students from SEGi University recently returned from a transformative academic and cultural exchange hosted by Dongying Vocational College in Shandong Province, China. Held from 8 to 13 June 2025, the six-day visit was fully sponsored by the host institution and led by Dr Ng Jiunn Yea from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The exchange offered students across Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering programmes an unparalleled opportunity to expand their global perspectives and engage with cutting-edge industry innovations.

The itinerary blended hands-on technical workshops with deep cultural immersion. From demonstrations in five-axis machining and 3D printing, to tours of smart construction training centres and art therapy labs, students experienced the fusion of advanced engineering and human-centred design in practice. A visit to the Yellow River Mouth further deepened their appreciation of environmental considerations in regional infrastructure development. The academic highlight was a PhD-led forum on the application of 3D printing technology in modern construction, where students engaged with researchers on real-world innovations shaping the future of sustainable building.

The exchange was not only a celebration of institutional ties between Malaysia and China but also a testament to SEGi’s commitment to internationalisation and engineering excellence. With UNESCO estimating that engineering professionals are critical to achieving more than 65% of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, such global engagements empower students to become agile problem-solvers and ethical innovators ready to contribute on a global stage.

This initiative also reinforced the importance of cultural understanding, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mutual learning — essential qualities in a world increasingly driven by technology and global interdependence.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 – Quality Education

SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
