From Workshop to World Stage: How SEGians Took on 74 Nations

SEGi University, in collaboration with Dongying Vocational College, recently marked an international milestone by participating in the prestigious World Vocational College Skills Competition 2024. Held from 21 to 31 October, with finals on 21 November in Tianjin, China, the global event carried the theme “Skilled Youth, Shining Future” and brought together nearly 30,000 contestants from 74 countries — making it one of the largest platforms for technical and vocational talent development worldwide.

Representing Malaysia and SEGi University in the “Equipment Manufacturing Track 1” category were students Ooi Wen Je, Jackson Leong, and Moey Chin Yi, who proudly brought home a Bronze Award at the group stage. Their outstanding performance reflects the strength of Malaysia’s youth talent in emerging industries and showcases SEGi’s commitment to nurturing real-world skills that align with global industrial demands.

Supporting the team were Dr Ng Jiunn Yea and Dr Sia Yaw Yoong, whose academic guidance and technical mentorship have been instrumental in preparing the students to meet international standards. SEGi’s participation exemplifies its strong belief in learning beyond the classroom, with a focus on hands-on, challenge-based experiences that develop industry-ready graduates.

With the global workforce increasingly shaped by automation, green technology, and digitalisation, SEGi’s focus on vocational skills directly supports Malaysia’s efforts to meet evolving industry needs. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, over 44% of core skills required for jobs are expected to change by 2027, with technical and problem-solving capabilities being among the most in demand.

This collaboration is also a strategic step towards advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by promoting access to quality education, international cooperation, and future-ready skills. Vocational education plays a crucial role in reducing youth unemployment, enhancing productivity, and ensuring inclusive growth across borders — all of which are core to SEGi’s educational mission.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 – Quality Education

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
