A Degree Gets You In. These Skills Get You Hired.

In an inspiring effort to bridge the gap between education and employment, SEGi University recently hosted a dynamic industry engagement session with YYC Advisors Malaysia, empowering future finance professionals with real-world insights and practical skills. Organised by the Faculty of Business, Accountancy & Law, SEGi University and led by Dr Sudhashini Nair, the Career Talk: Insights into a Career in Tax and Resume Writing Workshop on 18 June 2025 brought together industry leaders, recruitment experts, and eager students for a full-day of learning, exploration, and self-improvement.

Dr Stephen Sesaiah, Dean of the Faculty, opened the session by emphasising the importance of professional readiness and lifelong learning. This was followed by an engaging presentation by Joshua James Theseira, Senior Executive of Talent Acquisition at YYC, who shared the company’s mission, values, and strategic focus in grooming future tax professionals. His session not only introduced students to potential career pathways but also highlighted the fast-evolving demands of the accounting sector in Malaysia and beyond.

The highlight of the event was a powerful talk by Tax Director Tommy Chan Yoke Thean, who offered a deep dive into the often-overlooked domain of stamp duty audits and the high-level competencies required in tax consultancy. His message was clear: tax isn’t just numbers—it’s strategy, critical thinking, and a career with purpose. According to the OECD, tax revenues account for over 33.8% of GDP in developed nations, underscoring the profession’s vital role in sustaining public services and economic growth.

The session transitioned into a resume writing workshop conducted by YYC’s dedicated Talent Acquisition Team. Students worked closely with Penny Chong Pei Ni, Lilian Tee Li Yen, Joshua James Theseira and Leong Shin Yoong to craft resumes that truly reflect their strengths and aspirations. From personal branding tips to role-specific formatting strategies, the workshop equipped students with the tools to stand out in an increasingly competitive job market. A recent study by Zippia indicates that recruiters spend just 7.4 seconds on an initial resume scan—highlighting the importance of precision and impact.

Beyond skills training, this initiative underscores SEGi’s broader commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in advancing quality education, promoting decent work, and fostering just and inclusive institutions. By nurturing industry-academic partnerships, the institution is actively creating platforms that empower students with practical knowledge, ethical leadership, and market-ready competence.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Quality Education (SDG 4)
Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)
