In a bold move to tackle one of the world’s most preventable causes of death, SEGi University’s Faculty of Pharmacy and the SEGi Pharmacy Students’ Association (SPSA) launched the Public Health Campaign (PHC) 2025 with the theme “Feel Better, Live Better, Breathe Better: Go Tobacco-Free.” Held on 28 May 2025 at the Multipurpose Hall, the event marked a powerful convergence of education, advocacy, and community health leadership.
Organised with the support of the Malaysian Pharmacy Students’ Association (MyPSA) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the campaign was designed to raise awareness about the devastating health impacts of tobacco use. Beyond education, it aimed to empower individuals to make informed, smoke-free lifestyle choices and reinforce the pharmacist’s expanding role in public health and smoking cessation services.
Globally, tobacco kills over 8 million people annually, including 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke, according to the World Health Organization. In Malaysia alone, approximately 27,000 deaths are tobacco-related every year. These alarming figures underscore the urgency of student-led public health initiatives like PHC 2025.
Pharmacy students played a key role in facilitating engaging, fact-based exhibitions, consultations, and activities designed to challenge misconceptions and provide evidence-based support for those looking to quit. Their efforts reflect a curriculum and campus culture that deeply values community service, health education, and social responsibility.
By creating a space for public dialogue and preventative care awareness, the campaign not only highlighted current health issues but also fostered future-ready professionals committed to creating meaningful change in society. The initiative reflects SEGi’s commitment to nurturing healthcare leaders who are driven by both knowledge and compassion.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
