Alan Ling Elevates Legal and Political Leadership with SEGi MBA

Alan Ling Sie Kiong, a prominent Malaysian lawyer, politician, and former senator, has consistently demonstrated that meaningful leadership is built on service, integrity, and continuous learning. In 2023, Alan added another milestone to his distinguished career by completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from SEGi University, further reinforcing his commitment to governance, policy, and business leadership.

Ling’s academic credentials span both law and business, reflecting the hybrid expertise required in modern policymaking. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Sheffield and rose to national attention after defeating former Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam in the 2011 Sarawak State Election — becoming State Assemblyman for Piasau at just 28.

A Dual Career in Law and Politics

Currently the State Secretary of Sarawak for both the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Alan continues to influence state and national political discourse. He previously served as a Senator in the Dewan Negara (2018–2021) and remains actively engaged with the Malaysian Parliament through policy advocacy and institutional reform efforts.

In the legal field, Alan is Managing Partner of Suhaili & Ling Advocates in Miri and a Partner at Rohamat & Ling, with offices in Johor Bahru and Petaling Jaya. Called to the Bar in both West and East Malaysia, he is one of the few legal practitioners who seamlessly navigate jurisdictions across the country. His early legal training under the late Karpal Singh shaped his reputation as a bold and principled advocate — particularly in criminal and public interest law.

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Business Acumen

Alan’s pursuits go beyond law and politics. In 2008, at age 25, he became one of the earliest non-bank remittance operators licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia, operating in partnership with Western Union. This pioneering venture was later acquired by another operator in 2015 — a testament to his foresight in fintech services long before the sector saw widespread uptake.

His decision to pursue an MBA at SEGi University was driven by the need to strengthen his business acumen in an increasingly complex economic and political environment. The programme provided advanced competencies in corporate strategy, financial decision-making, and governance — all of which now inform his legal practice, boardroom involvement, and public responsibilities.

A Multi-Faceted National Leader

In addition to his political and business leadership, Alan was appointed to the Board of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) — one of the nation’s most strategically important economic sectors. He also serves as President of the Miri Volleyball Association (MVA), where he supports youth development and community sports outreach in his home state of Sarawak.

His broad influence — spanning government, business, civil society, and grassroots development — reflects the calibre of impact-driven professionals SEGi aims to nurture. Alan’s journey demonstrates how higher education continues to play a transformative role in public leadership.

A Testament to Lifelong Learning

In an era where multidisciplinary expertise is increasingly vital, Alan Ling’s career is a blueprint for future leaders who wish to combine legal rigour, political service, and entrepreneurial thinking. His SEGi MBA not only marks personal academic advancement but also strengthens his contribution to national development.
