Research from SEGi University has once again placed Malaysian scholarship on the international stage, with Prof. Dr. Srikumar Chakravarthi, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of SEGi University and his team publishing a compelling study titled “Evaluation of Sleep Patterns and Prevalence of Stress Among Undergraduate Dental Students” in the Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences (JPBS). The paper sheds light on critical issues affecting dental students, particularly the link between disrupted sleep patterns and heightened psychological stress, a growing concern in academic environments worldwide.
The Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences is a reputable, widely accessible platform indexed in PubMed Central, Scopus (Tier 2), Web of Science (Tier 2), ESCI, DOAJ and other top scientific databases. Ranked in Q2 across several categories, it adheres to rigorous peer review standards and boasts an expanding global influence through its increasing impact factor. Having research from SEGi showcased here underscores the credibility, visibility, and international reach of the institution’s scholarly output.
Sleep and stress are issues of growing concern among students globally. According to the World Health Organization, nearly one billion people worldwide live with a mental disorder, while stress-related challenges account for a significant portion of this burden. In Malaysia, a 2022 survey reported that more than 50% of university students experience poor sleep quality, while over 30% reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. The findings from SEGi therefore provide timely, evidence-based insights to support healthier academic environments and inform mental health strategies in higher education.
By addressing student well-being, this research reflects SEGi’s commitment to ensuring education is not only about academic success but also about nurturing resilient, healthy professionals who can excel in demanding careers such as dentistry. This is why SEGi invests in research that matters: to tackle real human challenges, influence policy, and build solutions that extend far beyond campus walls.
This achievement also demonstrates SEGi’s alignment with global sustainability priorities. The study directly supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by addressing student mental health, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive and supportive learning environments, and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by preparing healthier, well-adjusted graduates to thrive in the workforce. In doing so, SEGi contributes to building not only academic excellence but also a more sustainable society.
