SEGi University continues to drive innovation in higher education through impactful research training, recently conducting a Research Method Workshop for postgraduate students and young researchers. The initiative underscores SEGi’s commitment to strengthening research capability across disciplines and preparing graduates to address pressing global challenges with evidence-based solutions. Twenty participants took part in this workshop, gaining hands-on exposure to advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods delivered through Google Classroom.
The Research Method Workshop is more than a technical training — it is a strategic investment in producing research-driven talent aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNESCO reports that more than 50% of countries worldwide face a shortage of research and development professionals, particularly in areas critical to global wellbeing such as healthcare, technology, and sustainability. By strengthening postgraduate research capacity, SEGi is contributing towards closing this gap while nurturing the next generation of thought leaders who can create solutions with real-world impact.
This workshop reflects that same spirit, offering postgraduate candidates the skills and confidence to conduct meaningful research that addresses both local and global challenges. The focus on rigorous methodology ensures that their research is not only academically sound but also socially relevant, supporting national priorities and international frameworks.
Malaysia has set ambitious targets to increase its research output, with the Ministry of Higher Education emphasising the role of universities in contributing to high-impact publications and innovations. According to the Malaysian Science and Technology Indicators Report 2023, the country aims to raise its Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) to 2.5% of GDP by 2030, compared to just 1% in 2020 (MOSTI). SEGi’s workshop plays a vital role in preparing scholars to align with this national agenda by equipping them with tools to design, conduct, and present research that can influence policy and practice.
Workshops like this also reaffirm SEGi’s global outlook. With students from over 90 countries, SEGi is ranked among the top 1.5% of universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2026. This diverse academic environment allows postgraduate researchers to exchange perspectives, sharpen their critical thinking, and engage in collaborative projects that transcend borders. By training researchers to apply advanced methods across disciplines, SEGi ensures their work contributes not just to academia, but to communities and industries worldwide.
Ultimately, the Research Method Workshop signals why SEGi invests heavily in research training: to empower graduates who are capable of generating impactful knowledge and innovative solutions. In doing so, SEGi is preparing future scholars and professionals who can address global issues in healthcare, environment, governance, and beyond, ensuring education remains a powerful tool for transformation.
