The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & IT was honoured to participate in the World Ozone Day and Pre-Launch of National Environment Day 2025, held at Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam, on 21 September 2025. The event, organised by the Department of Environment, brought together students, educators, and the wider community to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer and promoting sustainable living.
Activities such as the Walk for Ozone, quizzes, pocket talks, and interactive sessions highlighted the significance of environmental stewardship. These engagements helped participants understand the role of the ozone layer in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation while also encouraging everyday sustainable practices. For students, this was more than just participation; it was an opportunity to see how scientific knowledge translates into real-world advocacy and action.
SEGi University’s involvement in this national-level initiative reflects its dedication to addressing urgent global challenges. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the ozone layer is on track to recover to 1980 levels by mid-century thanks to international action such as the Montreal Protocol. However, climate change continues to threaten ecosystems, human health, and biodiversity. The World Health Organization estimates that climate change will cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year between 2030 and 2050 due to malnutrition, disease, and heat stress.
By joining events like this, SEGi equips its students with the awareness and responsibility needed to play their part in sustainability efforts. It also reinforces the university’s role in producing graduates who not only excel academically but are also socially conscious and prepared to address pressing environmental issues. Engagement in such initiatives supports Malaysia’s national agenda in promoting sustainable practices and building resilience against climate-related risks.
Through partnerships and collaborative actions, SEGi continues to inspire its students to take the lead in advancing sustainability goals. Participation in World Ozone Day and the pre-launch of National Environment Day is part of a broader commitment to championing environmental conservation, health, and sustainable communities for the benefit of present and future generations.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 15: Life on Land
