Against All Odds: How Loss and Love Shaped a Doctor’s Destiny

Dr. Sree Shalini Mohan, a fresh graduate of SEGi University’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme this year, has a story that goes beyond academic achievement. It’s a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and find purpose in the face of profound loss. It’s a journey forged in fire, shaped by the crucible of grief and the unwavering pursuit of a dream.

A Father’s Legacy

“Losing my father, my best friend, just as I was entering the clinical phase of my medical studies was incredibly difficult,” Dr. Shalini shared, her voice reflecting the lingering pain of the memory. “He was so excited about my future, about the life that awaited me in Sibu. To not be able to share my experiences with him, my patient encounters, my struggles and triumphs, was devastating.”

She vividly remembered her father’s enthusiasm, how he would eagerly listen to her stories about histology and anatomy during her pre-clinical years. “He had this infectious curiosity,” she recalled, “always asking questions, wanting to understand the intricacies of the human body.” The thought of not being able to share her clinical experiences with him, the thrill of diagnosing a patient or the satisfaction of seeing someone heal, left a gaping hole in her heart.

But amidst the grief, a spark of resilience ignited. “My father’s last message to me was, ‘No matter what happens, life must go on, with or without me. You will succeed. So never back down.'” These words became her anchor, a guiding principle that propelled her forward.

Finding Strength in Adversity

Supported by her mother’s quiet strength, her uncle’s unwavering presence, and the incredible community at SEGi University, Shalini navigated the turbulent waters of grief and academic pressure.

“My peers and lecturers were my lifeline,” she recalled. “Their constant calls, messages, notes, and offers to study together helped me stay afloat.”

This experience taught her profound lessons about resilience and perseverance. “I realised that no matter how difficult things seemed, it wasn’t the end,” she reflected. “If I had let grief derail my dreams, I would have been filled with regret. This understanding will stay with me throughout my medical career.” She paused, then added, “It taught me that even when you think it’s over, it’s not. You can always find a way to move forward, to keep fighting for what you believe in.”

Leading and Learning: The Leos Club

Shalini’s journey wasn’t solely defined by overcoming hardship. She actively sought opportunities for growth, embracing leadership roles in the Leos Club for two consecutive years. This wasn’t just about adding a line to her CV; it was about pushing her boundaries and discovering new facets of herself.

“Juggling the responsibilities of being president with my demanding academic schedule was definitely a challenge,” she admitted. “There were late nights fuelled by coffee, frantic study sessions squeezed between meetings, and the constant pressure to balance both worlds.” But she persevered, driven by a desire to make a difference and to honour her father’s belief in her abilities.

“It taught me that nothing is impossible if you put your mind and heart into it,” she said. “And facing unexpected challenges, like organising an entire event with just a week’s notice, reinforced the power of teamwork and quick thinking.” She recounted the story of that event with a smile, remembering the frantic rush to secure a venue, find sponsors, and coordinate with her committee members, all while preparing for exams.

“It was chaotic,” she admitted, “but we pulled it off, and the sense of accomplishment was incredible.” The experience taught her the importance of delegation, effective communication, and staying calm under pressure.

Her involvement in the Leos Club also deepened her understanding of empathy and community service, qualities she recognises as crucial for a doctor. “Through charity work, I met people from all walks of life, forming bonds that extended beyond my role as a student,” she shared. “These experiences taught me the importance of kindness, patience, and understanding, especially when you don’t know what others are going through.”

Navigating New Territories

Beyond the loss of her father, Shalini faced other challenges on her path to becoming a doctor.

“Transitioning to a new environment during my clinical years was tough,” she admitted. “The different pace, new responsibilities, and unfamiliar surroundings were overwhelming at first.” But she leaned on her support system – family, friends, and lecturers – and embraced a growth mindset, learning and adapting along the way.

“Eventually, I found my footing, built confidence, and rediscovered the joy in patient care,” she said. “It reminded me of why I chose this path in the first place.”

A Doctor’s Heart

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Shalini recognises the key strengths she has developed: resilience, empathy, and a deep understanding of the human condition. These qualities, coupled with her passion for medicine and her father’s enduring legacy, have shaped her into the compassionate and determined doctor she is today.

“My experiences have allowed me to truly put myself in the position of my patients,” she said. “I strive to make decisions that will provide the best possible outcome for them, to see them achieve their best possible health.”

Dreams for the Future

Looking ahead, Dr. Shalini envisions a career where she can make a tangible impact on her patients’ lives. “I hope to specialise in a field like orthopaedics or cardiology,” she shared, “where I can help people regain their mobility or improve their heart health.” But her aspirations extend beyond the clinical realm. “I want to be a doctor who not only treats illnesses but also empowers patients to take charge of their health,” she explained. “I want to build strong, trust-based relationships with my patients and advocate for preventative care.”

On a personal level, she aspired to continue growing as an individual, balancing her demanding career with meaningful relationships and her passions for music and community service. “Ultimately,” she said, “I hope to leave a legacy of kindness, dedication, and positive change.”

Words of Wisdom

For students facing challenges while pursuing their dreams, Dr. Shalini offers this advice: “Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. It’s okay to lean on your support system and ask for help when needed. Stay focused on your goals, and remember that perseverance is key. Even in the darkest times, trust that your efforts will lead to brighter days ahead. Believe in yourself, and never lose sight of your dreams.”

Dr. Shalini’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of immense loss, the human spirit can find a way to heal, to grow, and to serve. Her journey, culminating in her graduation this year, is an inspiration to us all, a testament to the enduring power of love, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of a dream.
