Collaborations Like This Are Fuel for Malaysia’s Industrial Growth

A proud alumnus of SEGi University’s Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering programme, Galen Jude Lyons, has embarked on the next stage of his academic and professional journey by enrolling in the MSc (Engineering) by Research. Offered under the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, the programme is designed to foster research excellence while cultivating industry-relevant skills.

For his master’s research, Galen is undertaking an industrial project in collaboration with Daikin Electronic Devices Malaysia in Shah Alam, Selangor. The project bridges academic learning with real-world engineering practice, providing him with hands-on experience in tackling technological challenges faced by the industry. Such initiatives demonstrate SEGi University’s dedication to producing graduates who are research-oriented, industry-ready, and capable of driving innovation in Malaysia’s industrial landscape.

The collaboration is supported by academic supervisor Ir. Dr Shamini Janasekaran and industry mentor Tan Ching Hau, Head of Department of Technology Innovation at Daikin. Both mentors emphasised the significance of this joint effort in advancing academic research while contributing to industrial innovation. Partnerships of this kind are increasingly vital, as Malaysia’s engineering sector continues to expand, employing over 170,000 engineers nationwide.

This initiative also reflects the global trend of integrating education and industry, a model that UNESCO identifies as critical to sustainable growth in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. By embedding students in industrial projects, higher education institutions equip graduates with problem-solving skills and applied knowledge that enhance employability and strengthen national competitiveness.

Malaysia’s industrial sector contributes nearly 37% of the country’s GDP, making research collaborations such as this one essential for economic progress. By working with industry leaders like Daikin, SEGi ensures its postgraduate students can contribute to impactful projects that support both local and global technological advancement.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

SDG 4 (Quality Education)

SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure)
