Dato’ Ramli Mohd Nor Breaks Barriers in Politics and Public Service with SEGi DBA

Dato’ Ramli bin Mohd Nor stands as a historic and inspirational figure in Malaysia’s political and public service landscape. A trailblazer in every sense, he is not only the first-ever Orang Asli Member of Parliament in Malaysian history but also a distinguished Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat I and Non-Executive Chairman of Amanah Raya Berhad (ARB).

In 2024, Dato’ Ramli added another remarkable milestone to his decorated career by earning a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from SEGi University. The advanced doctoral qualification adds to his already extensive academic portfolio and reflects his commitment to continuous learning and effective leadership.

From Orang Asli Roots to National Parliament

Born in 1958 in Batu 12 Orang Asli Settlement, Gombak, Selangor, Dato’ Ramli is of Semai and Temiar descent, representing the indigenous communities of Cameron Highlands and Gua Musang. His career journey began in 1980 at the Johor Port Authority and expanded into a 34-year tenure with the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), retiring with the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

His election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Cameron Highlands in 2019 was a historic moment, securing 56.18% of the vote during a critical by-election. He successfully defended his seat in the 2022 general election with a stronger majority, affirming public confidence in his leadership.

In 2022, he was appointed Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat I, further reinforcing his national stature. He also chairs the board of Amanah Raya Berhad, Malaysia’s leading trustee company under the Ministry of Finance.

A Leader Shaped by Education and Service

Dato’ Ramli’s academic background is among the most comprehensive in Malaysian politics:

  • Diplomas in Public Administration and Police Science (UiTM and UKM)
  • Certificate in Criminal Justice Education (University of Virginia, USA)

This extensive education has enabled him to bridge public policy with operational leadership, strategic management, and community development. His doctorate from SEGi represents a commitment not only to public service but also to evidence-based policy leadership.

Representing Marginalised Voices at the Highest Level

Dato’ Ramli’s representation of Orang Asli communities at the national level has redefined indigenous participation in Malaysian governance. He continues to champion inclusive policies, indigenous rights, and rural development in Parliament — ensuring that voices from the nation’s heartlands are heard at the highest decision-making levels.

His leadership aligns strongly with Malaysia’s broader efforts to create a more inclusive, educated, and innovation-driven public sector — one that values diversity, integrity, and global competence.
