Experts Warn of New Disaster Challenges Ahead

Natural disasters continue to pose significant threats to Malaysia’s infrastructure, economy, and communities, with floods, landslides, earthquakes, and soil settlement becoming increasingly frequent and severe due to the effects of climate change. Recognising the urgent need for resilience and preparedness, SEGi University in collaboration with RF Consultant Sdn. Bhd. is organising a 1-Day Seminar on Natural Disasters in Malaysia: Issues, Challenges & Prediction. The seminar will bring together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals to share insights, present research, and explore sustainable strategies for disaster risk reduction.

The programme is designed to serve as a vital knowledge-sharing platform, bridging academia, industry, and government agencies. Distinguished speakers will cover topics ranging from climate change and policy interventions to landslide prediction, sustainable forest management, seismic research, and soil settlement issues that impact construction projects. These discussions aim to improve understanding of disaster risks and introduce predictive technologies that can enhance Malaysia’s ability to respond effectively to future challenges.

The importance of such initiatives is underscored by global data. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Asia accounted for 83% of global disaster-affected populations between 2000 and 2019. In Malaysia alone, floods in December 2021 caused damages estimated at RM6.1 billion. These statistics highlight the need for collaborative approaches in disaster management, where research-driven solutions and community preparedness play an essential role in reducing losses and safeguarding lives.

By engaging students, researchers, and professionals, SEGi is strengthening capacity building in disaster science and engineering. The seminar reflects the university’s commitment to preparing the next generation of experts with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to contribute to Malaysia’s disaster resilience and sustainable infrastructure development.

Beyond technical expertise, the seminar reinforces the importance of partnerships across different sectors, aligning with Malaysia’s national climate and sustainability goals. Through proactive initiatives such as this, SEGi continues to champion solutions that address real-world challenges while nurturing socially responsible graduates who can lead in times of crisis.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
