SEGi University continues to champion healthy ageing and community well-being with the second phase of its Community-Based Exercise initiative, held on 15 March 2025 at U3A Selangor. Following the success of its first session on 12 October 2024, this initiative extended its reach to a new group of seniors, reinforcing SEGi’s commitment to promoting active and fulfilling lifestyles for older adults.
The programme focused on Core Strength Exercises tailored to the physical capabilities of senior participants, incorporating gentle stretching, balance training, and functional movements. With studies showing that falls account for over 30% of injuries among adults over 65, these exercises play a vital role in reducing fall risks, improving mobility, and enhancing overall physical health. By engaging directly with the community, SEGi continues to drive health-focused initiatives that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
This initiative is also part of a research grant project led by Associate Professor Dr Lim Boon Hooi, supported by SEGi’s internal grant programme. Backed by a team of expert researchers, including Dr Chris Lee and Dr Abel Raj, the project aims to advance research on fitness and well-being in ageing populations. According to Harvard Medical School, regular core exercises in older adults can improve stability and reduce falls by up to 40%, highlighting the significance of initiatives like this in promoting preventive healthcare for seniors.
The event also provided a valuable learning platform for postgraduate students, who participated in organising and facilitating the programme. By integrating practical experience with academic learning, students were able to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, fulfilling their community engagement requirements while contributing to a meaningful social cause. The initiative aligns with Quality Education (SDG 4) by enhancing experiential learning and research-driven knowledge-sharing.
Beyond promoting physical well-being, this initiative supports Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) by advocating for active ageing and preventive healthcare. As Malaysia’s senior population is expected to reach 15% by 2030, it is crucial to implement community-driven health programmes that equip older adults with the tools to maintain independence and quality of life.
With a strong commitment to serving the community and advancing impactful research, SEGi continues to lead innovative health initiatives that support active ageing, student development, and sustainable well-being. By expanding such programmes to broader community groups, SEGi is ensuring that education, research, and real-world application come together to create lasting societal benefits.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
• Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3)
• Quality Education (SDG 4)
• Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)
