How to Get Published in SCOPUS and WoS Without Losing Your Mind

SEGi University continued its commitment to academic excellence and global visibility through a dynamic knowledge-sharing session titled Demystifying SCOPUS and WoS Article Publication by Sportsman with SCOPUS-WoSMan on 24 March 2025. The talk, led by prolific scholar Associate Professor Dr Lim Boon Hooi, attracted over 20 enthusiastic postgraduate students and staff, both in person and virtually, who were eager to learn how to elevate their research through publication in high-impact journals.

The session explored the fundamentals of Web of Science (WoS) and SCOPUS-indexed journals and provided strategic guidance for identifying the right journals, understanding indexing criteria, and maximising visibility in the academic world. Participants were introduced to best practices in preparing articles using the IMRaD format and gained insights into why publishing in these databases matters—not just for personal academic recognition, but also for institutional reputation and world rankings.

Publishing in SCOPUS and WoS plays a critical role in advancing research impact, academic credibility, and international collaboration. According to Elsevier, more than 25,000 journals are indexed in SCOPUS, making it one of the largest abstract and citation databases in the world. As global universities compete for research-driven rankings, visibility in these platforms has become essential. This session helped demystify that process for early-career academics and postgraduate researchers.

Dr Lim, who has published over 100 articles in both local and international journals, shared insider strategies for successful submissions, including maintaining author name consistency, building collaborative networks, and complying with journal-specific citation formats. His approachable delivery and real-world advice made complex processes accessible to all attendees, sparking high engagement and interaction throughout the session.

By equipping students and staff with the tools to navigate academic publishing confidently, SEGi continues to cultivate a strong research culture that aligns with international benchmarks. Events like this reinforce the university’s dedication to knowledge creation, innovation, and global academic participation.
