The Human Settlement, Heritage & Conservation Committee of Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) recently hosted the PAM Merdeka Weekend Programme from the 19th to the 21st of August 2023 in honor of Malaysian Independence Day. Among the various engaging activities held during the weekend, the PAM Merdeka Sketch Competition stood out as a creative highlight.
Held on August 19, 2023, this competition challenged participants to create an observational sketch of the iconic Merdeka 118 Tower, as viewed from either Stadium Merdeka or Stadium Negara. The task spanned approximately four hours, starting at 9.30 am and concluding at 1.30 pm.
The choice of Merdeka 118 Tower as the focal point of the sketch was deliberate, given its distinctive presence and status as the world’s second-tallest structure. Its significance harmoniously resonates with Malaysia’s historical landmarks, Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara, both situated in close proximity. This choice served to reinforce Malaysia’s 66 years of growth and progress.
The competition welcomed participants from diverse backgrounds and was open to the public. It was categorized into two sections: Category A, themed ‘Stadium Merdeka,’ and Category B, themed ‘Stadium Negara.’ Each category further divided into Student and Young Professional subcategories, ensuring an inclusive platform for talents at various stages of their careers.
A total of 100 individuals from esteemed institutions across Malaysia, including University Malaya, International Islamic University Malaysia, City University, Politeknik Merlimau, and SEGi University, enthusiastically participated in the event. Their collective creativity and passion infused the competition with vibrant energy and remarkable artistic expression.
Among the participants, Mohammad Nazirulhaq bin A. Wahab, a dedicated lecturer from the Architecture Department at SEGi University’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (FOEBEIT), made a significant mark. He not only participated actively but also clinched the prestigious 1st Prize for Team A in the ‘Stadium Merdeka’ category under the Young Professional segment. A heartfelt congratulations to him for this well-deserved achievement!
The PAM Merdeka Sketch Competition 2023 not only celebrated Malaysia’s architectural marvels but also showcased the depth of artistic talent thriving within the country. The event exemplified the spirit of creativity, community, and national pride, marking a memorable chapter in Malaysia’s cultural tapestry.
