Intellectual property (IP) is a critical driver of innovation, economic growth, and creative industries, yet many remain unaware of the importance of protecting their original work. To bridge this knowledge gap, SEGi University hosted a specialised talk on Intellectual Property (IP) featuring a representative from MyIPO (Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia). This initiative aligns with global efforts to promote innovation and safeguard intellectual assets, reinforcing SEGi’s commitment to academic excellence and research development.
Over the past two years, faculty members at SEGi have been actively developing intellectual properties across multiple categories, including Copyright, Patents, and Trademarks. According to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), global patent filings have increased by 3.6% annually, demonstrating the growing emphasis on intellectual property protection in the digital economy. The session provided valuable insights into registration processes, legal criteria, and the significance of securing intellectual rights, ensuring that faculty members are empowered to protect their innovations.
As universities play a key role in driving research and technological advancements, the importance of IP protection cannot be overstated. In Malaysia alone, only 20% of university research leads to commercialisation, largely due to inadequate IP awareness. By educating staff on the legal and strategic aspects of IP, SEGi enhances its ability to turn research into marketable innovations, contributing to knowledge-based economic growth.
Beyond patents and trademarks, the session highlighted the importance of Copyright protection, particularly in academic and creative works. The global digital content market is expected to reach USD 842 billion by 2030, making copyright protection essential for safeguarding original research, educational materials, and creative output. Increased awareness in this area is expected to lead to higher submission rates for Copyright applications, strengthening SEGi’s position as a hub for intellectual and creative development.
This initiative reinforces SEGi’s commitment to fostering an innovation-driven culture, where faculty and researchers are equipped with the knowledge to protect and commercialise their work effectively. By collaborating with industry leaders like MyIPO, SEGi ensures that its academic community stays ahead in the rapidly evolving landscape of intellectual property rights.
As intellectual property continues to shape global industries, universities must play an active role in developing IP literacy among academics and students. SEGi remains dedicated to promoting knowledge creation, safeguarding original ideas, and contributing to the national and global innovation ecosystem.
