Seas the Day: SEGians Tackles Marine Pollution in Major Coastal Cleanup Effort

On 21 September 2024, SEGi University’s Bachelor of Optometry students organised a meaningful coastal clean-up event, titled Seas the Day!, at Pantai Tanjung Harapan, Klang. The initiative, part of the International Coastal Cleanup 2024 by Reef Check, was a huge success, reflecting SEGi’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This effort supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water), contributing to healthier oceans and coastlines.

Partnering with Jeans Beach Vibes, students collected 70.7 kilograms of waste, making a significant contribution to improving the local environment. Through their hard work, participants were reminded of the vital role clean beaches play in maintaining marine ecosystems. Jean, the founder of Jeans Beach Vibes, expressed her gratitude, saying, “The students’ dedication today not only helped restore our beach but will hopefully inspire more sustainable choices in their daily lives.”

The clean-up was not just about picking up litter; it was also a data-gathering opportunity to support future environmental research. Students actively contributed to Reef Check’s ongoing efforts to protect marine biodiversity. A study from Ocean Conservancy reveals that approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, and such clean-up initiatives are essential to reducing that number.

Law, the academic advisor for the event, highlighted the broader impact of this clean-up, stating, “Our small actions today will lead to long-term benefits for the environment. This was more than just picking up trash; it was about taking a stand against pollution and working together for a sustainable future.” This hands-on learning opportunity was invaluable for students, not only enhancing their understanding of environmental issues but also developing their leadership and teamwork skills.

Through events like Seas the Day!, SEGi continues to inspire students to think globally while acting locally. The effort is a testament to SEGi’s dedication to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, both within the institution and beyond.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
