SEGi University recently held “The Caboodle Toolkit: Hands-on Maths, Literacy and Play for Educators,” a unique workshop dedicated to advancing early childhood education through innovative teaching strategies. Organised by Sindu A/P Selvanathan from the Faculty of Early Learning and Psychology Malaysia (FoELPM), the event attracted a robust turnout of 180 students from SEGi campuses across Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya, and Kuala Lumpur, all keen to enhance their skills in engaging young learners.
This workshop introduced creative approaches for building foundational literacy and numeracy skills, essential for children’s educational development. With sessions such as “Once Upon a Literacy,” “Indoor Adventure: Playful Learning from Outside In,” and “Number Tales: Teaching Maths Concepts One Story at a Time,” participants delved into storytelling and play-based learning. Such methods align with research showing that interactive, hands-on activities can improve children’s cognitive and social skills, providing critical support for early childhood development.
The workshop emphasised the importance of nurturing imagination, active learning, and problem-solving in young learners. Through storytelling and hands-on activities, educators learned new ways to inspire curiosity and holistic growth. Partnering with BusyBees Preschool further enriched the experience, enabling participants to observe practical applications and engage in a walk-in interview session to explore potential career paths.
Sindu A/P Selvanathan shared her enthusiasm, noting, “We are thrilled to offer this platform for early childhood educators to explore fresh, creative approaches to learning. When we bring play into education, we unlock new ways for children to grow and discover their world.”
Hosting “The Caboodle Toolkit” highlights SEGi University’s dedication to providing quality education that prepares early childhood professionals with the skills needed in modern classrooms. The event is a testament to SEGi’s commitment to addressing critical global education needs, with UNICEF reporting that over 200 million children under five lack the necessary cognitive and social-emotional development (UNICEF). This workshop empowers future educators to bridge these gaps, making a meaningful contribution to the global education landscape.
