SEGi University recently participated in a collaborative workshop on value engineering at UCSI University on 5 March 2024. This event brought together students from both institutions to work on the redesign of an old shophouse in Kajang, currently serving as the Kajang Heritage Centre. The workshop aimed to apply value engineering principles to enhance the building’s functionality while incorporating sustainable features, reflecting SEGi’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in education.
Students engaged in brainstorming sessions, group discussions, and presentations, guided by expert facilitators from both universities. They focused on identifying the essential functions of the heritage centre and finding cost-effective ways to achieve these functions without compromising quality or sustainability. This hands-on approach provided participants with a rich learning experience, encouraging them to explore innovative ideas within the framework of value engineering.
The workshop resulted in several innovative design proposals that integrated sustainable features such as energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and eco-friendly materials. These designs aimed to maintain the building’s historical and cultural significance while enhancing its role as a community resource. The proposals were presented to peers and facilitators, showcasing the students’ commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation.
This event was a resounding success, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling real-world challenges. It demonstrated SEGi’s dedication to providing students with valuable practical experience and fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
