On 10 September 2024, an educational site visit was organised for third-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying students as part of the Site Analysis module. A total of 43 participants, including 40 students and 3 lecturers, embarked on this immersive learning experience in Melaka. The visit was designed to fulfill the requirements of several key subjects: Integrated Project, Building Construction I, and Building Construction II, providing students with practical exposure to vital aspects of construction and development.
The site visit aimed to deepen students’ understanding of cost and economic factors affecting project costs, alongside critical evaluations such as the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA), and Social Impact Assessment (SIA). Students were also introduced to preliminary construction works and gained hands-on experience with both substructure and superstructure elements, vital for their future roles in the industry.
Third-year students were tasked with analysing the gathered site information for the feasibility study of a proposed boutique hotel development. Meanwhile, first-year students were responsible for compiling a report on the preliminary works and the structural elements, which would be showcased in a poster format. The visit encompassed an exploration of Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay village known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Kampung Morten has become a major tourist attraction, contributing significantly to Melaka’s economy, which provides essential insights into the potential demographic demand for the proposed hotel development.
The students documented their observations and gained valuable insights into how cultural heritage and modern development can coexist. This visit also provided international students from China, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, and Brunei with a unique perspective on Melaka’s historic landscape, enhancing their cultural learning experience.
Additionally, the students visited the construction site of an Annex Educational building for the Melaka Department of Education in Bukit Katil. Organised by JKR Melaka, the visit provided students with exposure to innovative construction techniques, such as the “Slanted Frame Column Design,” and the importance of adhering to safety standards. This practical experience gave students a deeper appreciation for the dynamic nature of construction processes and how sustainable development practices are becoming an industry norm.
The site visit was an invaluable opportunity for SEGi students to gain practical knowledge in alignment with global sustainability initiatives.
