SEGi’s Innovative Solutions Impress at IIC 2024

Dr Priyadatchini Karunakaran from SEGi University’s Civil Engineering department has made a significant mark at the International Innovation Competition (IIC) 2024, organised by the International University of Malaya-Wales. The competition, held on 30 June 2024, focused on innovations for sustainable environmental preservation under the theme “Reshaping the Community Development for Social Impact.” Dr Karunakaran’s project, “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Environmental Preservation,” was developed with the SEGi Soil Engineering Group, comprising Bachelor’s Degree students in Civil Engineering.

Over an intense week from 23rd to 30th June 2024, the team dedicated themselves to producing a compelling 5-minute video submission. With no initial video editing skills, the students, including Irvin Irawan, Asyraf Shukri, Mohamad Alghareeb, Mohamad Al-Sulaiman, and Su Yiqing, learned and improved their abilities through relentless effort. This project provided a valuable learning experience in concept development, video editing, and team collaboration.

The video highlights crucial environmental issues posed by the construction sector and presents sustainable and effective landslide mitigation strategies. It also showcases innovative solutions such as recycling plastic waste, leveraging technology, and fostering partnerships to create local market opportunities. These efforts aim to reshape community development, generating social, economic, and environmental impacts. The project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

The importance of sustainable practices in civil engineering is underscored by statistics from the Global Construction 2030 report, which predicts the volume of construction output will grow by 85% to USD$15.5 trillion (RM71.3 trillion) worldwide by 2030. Addressing environmental impacts through innovative engineering solutions is critical to managing this growth sustainably.

SEGi’s participation in IIC 2024 highlights the institution’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in education. By tackling real-world challenges and promoting sustainable development, SEGi continues to foster a culture of excellence and forward-thinking among its students and faculty. The results of the competition, to be announced on 31 July 2024, are eagerly anticipated as a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of SEGi’s team.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
