A recent study introduces an innovative Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart system designed to elevate campus operations by enhancing automation, safety, and efficiency. The research, led by S. H. T. Hussien, H. A. R. N. Farhana, and L. Vinukumar from SEGi University, in collaboration with C. H. C. Alexander and S. Sivakumar, presents a comprehensive framework for implementing intelligent systems in higher education institutions.
The smart campus system comprises three core components:
-
Smart Attendance System
Leveraging RFID technology and an ESP microcontroller, this subsystem offers real-time attendance tracking and feedback. Student registration statuses are instantly displayed on OLED screens, effectively reducing administrative errors and enhancing classroom engagement. -
Smart Security System
This module integrates RFID access control with servo motors and buzzer alerts to secure designated classrooms and labs. The Blynk mobile application allows authorised personnel to monitor access activity in real time, ensuring a safe and controlled learning environment. -
Smart Fire Alarm System
Equipped with Wi-Fi-connected flame sensors, the fire alarm system detects hazards and immediately alerts users through the Blynk application. Seamless integration with the security system enables automated door control during emergencies, supporting faster evacuation and incident response.
The unified IoT ecosystem developed through this project offers substantial improvements in administrative accuracy, safety protocols, and campus convenience. By connecting multiple sub-systems into a responsive and data-driven infrastructure, the research demonstrates how emerging technologies can address operational challenges in educational settings.
This work reflects SEGi University’s ongoing commitment to innovation in smart education and technology-driven learning environments. Furthermore, it supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):
-
Goal 4: Quality Education – enhancing the learning experience through digital transformation.
-
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – fostering cutting-edge technological integration.
-
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – ensuring safe, resilient, and inclusive campus spaces.
