Gaining real-world engineering experience, Sugkhesh Ganasen, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering student from SEGi University, recently completed the first half of his internship journey at Daikin Electronic Devices Malaysia. His placement marks a key step in transforming academic knowledge into applied industry skills, as part of SEGi’s mission to produce industry-ready graduates through immersive, hands-on learning. The visit brought together both academic and industry supervisors for a meaningful mid-term review of progress, growth, and future readiness.
During the scheduled meeting, Sugkhesh shared valuable insights with his academic supervisor, Ir. Dr. Shamini Janasekaran, and industry supervisor Ahmad Fatihin. He reflected on the engineering competencies he has developed, the real-life challenges encountered, and the technical knowledge he’s been able to apply in active projects. The experience has allowed him to move beyond the classroom into a fast-paced engineering environment, equipping him with a deeper understanding of operational systems, production standards, and workplace dynamics.
Beyond the individual growth, the visit underscored the importance of meaningful industry-academia partnerships in shaping future-ready professionals. Feedback from both supervisors revealed the effectiveness of the internship structure and its ability to align student learning with real-world expectations. These collaborative efforts are essential in today’s rapidly evolving job market, where adaptability, technical fluency, and critical thinking are in high demand.
According to the World Economic Forum, by 2025, half of all employees will require reskilling due to accelerating technological advancements and automation. Internship opportunities like this are no longer optional—they are vital in closing the gap between education and employability, especially in technical disciplines like engineering.
For Sugkhesh, this internship has provided a strong foundation to step into the workforce with confidence and competence. It has given him the opportunity to engage directly with engineers, contribute to industry projects, and witness first-hand the impact of mechanical engineering on product development and innovation.
SEGi extends its appreciation to Daikin Electronic Devices Malaysia for their continued commitment to empowering young talents and supporting Malaysia’s future engineering workforce. These hands-on experiences are essential to producing graduates who are not only technically proficient but also capable of adapting to the needs of modern industry.
