SEGi University proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of Ir. Choo Chee Ming, Senior Chemical Engineering academic staff from the Faculty of Engineering, who was awarded the Top Mentor Award 2024 by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). The recognition was presented during the 66th IEM Annual Dinner & Awards Night on 19 April 2025 at the Sunway Resort Hotel, where the nation’s top engineering professionals gathered to honour excellence and mentorship.
Presented by IEM President Ir. Professor Dr. Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin, this prestigious award recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions as Engineering Competency Development (ECD) mentors—playing a vital role in shaping Malaysia’s next generation of Professional Engineers. Ir. Choo’s nomination came directly from his own mentees, a testament to the impact he has made through years of dedicated guidance.
The IEM’s ECD subcommittee evaluated the nomination based on mentee feedback, mentoring outcomes, and Ir. Choo’s professional accomplishments. His mentorship journey, which began in 2011 under the Log Book Training Scheme (LBTS), has seen numerous mentees successfully achieve Professional Engineer status. By integrating industrial experience and academic insight, he has consistently provided high-impact mentorship aligned with the IEM’s outcome-based framework, the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) UK model.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ir. Choo acknowledged the inspiration of his own mentor during his formative years and credited his mentees for their dedication and trust. His work exemplifies the transformative power of academic mentorship in professional development—a cornerstone of SEGi’s engineering education philosophy.
This recognition underscores SEGi’s commitment to nurturing industry-relevant talent and fostering lifelong learning opportunities in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. As Malaysia continues to advance towards its target of producing 300,000 engineers by 2030 (source), the role of mentors like Ir. Choo remains critical in ensuring engineering graduates are competent, ethical, and globally competitive.
This award not only affirms Ir. Choo’s legacy as an exceptional mentor but also reflects SEGi’s dedication to academic excellence, professional guidance, and sustainable development within the engineering discipline.
