This Visit Proved Why Industry Experience Can’t Wait Until Graduation

On 11 April 2025, two third-year engineering students from SEGi University—Mak Khai Hou (Bachelor of Electrical Engineering) and Sugkhesh Ganasen (Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering)—took a significant step toward their professional futures during a visit and internship interview at Daikin Electronic Devices Malaysia Sdn Bhd (DEDM), Shah Alam. Accompanied by Ir. Dr. Shamini Janasekaran, the visit marked a valuable bridge between academic learning and real-world industry practice.

The DEDM team welcomed the delegation with a detailed briefing on the company’s core operations, ongoing engineering projects, and available internship opportunities. The session offered Mak and Sugkhesh a deeper understanding of how theoretical knowledge translates into technical applications in a high-performing corporate environment. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were evident as they engaged in discussions with DEDM engineers, exploring how innovation, teamwork, and sustainability drive the industry forward.

Following the company tour, both students participated in a formal internship interview with DEDM’s engineering panel. The interview evaluated their technical competencies, communication abilities, and alignment with industry expectations. The panel was impressed by their eagerness to learn and proactive approach—qualities that are vital for thriving in a dynamic, technology-driven sector.

Initiatives like this reinforce SEGi’s commitment to experiential learning, industry exposure, and talent development. According to the International Labour Organization, employers increasingly value work-based learning as a key factor in employability and skills readiness. By embedding real-world engagement early in the academic journey, students gain a competitive edge while developing the adaptability required in today’s rapidly evolving workforce.

The visit also reflects SEGi’s broader mission to cultivate engineering graduates who are not only technically skilled but also future-ready contributors to national development. With the engineering sector in Malaysia projected to grow at 5.7% annually through 2028, building strong university-industry collaborations is more important than ever in equipping students to meet the demand for skilled professionals in sustainable infrastructure, smart technologies, and industrial innovation.

Such meaningful exchanges pave the way for long-term partnerships between academia and industry. This visit to DEDM stands as a strong example of how SEGi continues to provide its students with opportunities that empower, inspire, and prepare them to lead the way forward in engineering excellence.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).
