Transforming Ideas into Reality

SEGi University recently took a significant step in advancing educational outreach and sustainable development by hosting an engineering fair titled “Ideas to Reality: The Power of Engineering [Phase 1]” at Harvest International School, Klang. This event, held on July 24, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, was organized as part of the community service initiatives through MPU3432 Co-Curriculum: Sustainability Thinking, led by Dr. Priyadatchini Karunakaran. The fair was designed to bridge gaps in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

The event was a dynamic showcase of creativity and innovation, featuring projects developed by Year 1 and Year 2 engineering students from SEGi’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (FOEBEIT). Over the course of 4.5 weeks, the students selected projects, planned, procured materials, and developed prototypes with a budget of less than RM300 per group. With the guidance of Ir. Dr. Patrick Teoh and Mr. Teoh, the students crafted impressive designs aimed at inspiring the younger generation to explore the world of engineering.

The engineering fair attracted 60 Year 10 and Year 11 students from Harvest International School, offering them a hands-on experience in sustainable engineering. The event successfully met its objectives, including fostering collaboration, enhancing communication, and promoting sustainable engineering practices. Through engaging practical model-building activities, SEGi’s engineering students not only demonstrated technical prowess but also encouraged school students to think proactively and outwardly in their approach to problem-solving and collaboration.

A significant outcome of the event was the keen interest shown by the school students, with 21 students providing their contact information and expressing interest in pursuing engineering courses. This response underscores the success of the fair in sparking interest in STEM education among the next generation, aligning with SEGi University’s mission to provide quality education and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations SDGs.

SEGi’s commitment to advancing sustainable development through education is evident in initiatives like “Ideas to Reality.” By empowering students with the skills and knowledge to address global challenges, SEGi University is not only fostering a culture of innovation but also preparing future leaders who are equipped to make a positive impact on the world.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 (Quality Education)
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
